Ann Demeulemeester Matte Sequin Vest

What's life without a little glam? Ann Demeulemeester vest in matte Black sequins on Black silk chiffon with rough edges to keep it from being too precious. With no closure, it drapes open with a louche ease. The strong overhead lighting made the sequins shinier than they are in reality. I will wear this as casually as possible over a tee or tank, perhaps just peeking out under a jacket--day or night. We have an event coming up soon . . .

Falling For Faliero Sarti

I was visiting my favorite Shrine to Black: Atelier New York a couple of weeks ago, when none other than Will.i.am of The Black Eyed Peas sauntered in to peruse the racks--sans entourage. I knew the Black Eyed Peas were performing at Madison Square Garden, but what a rare treat to see him in person looking slicker than ever in his Rick Owens Black nylon jacket piling up fabulous clothes from Atelier's niche designers. But, enough about Will.i.am.

I had heard of Faliero Sarti and their delicately ethereal scarves, but feared that since Winter was on the wane, that I would have to wait until next year to procure one. Well, Atelier was onto me. This beautiful Silver Grey 90% Modal/10% Cashmere delight was dangling just within my grasp and when I touched it, I knew it had to be mine. I've been buying a lot of black lately and sticking to a more neutral palette. This feather light scarf will add a touch of fragile draped texture to my more severe silhouettes. I'm wearing it in my Monday Outfit post this week.

Available at Atelier New York.

Acne Gladiator Sandals

I've been searching for just the right pair of sandals for the warmer weather. Because I live in NYC, where we actually walk a great deal of the time, I wanted something comfortable with a thick enough sole to offer support, but of course I was not willing to sacrifice style.

The Acne Tour Low sandals are actually from Spring/Summer '09 and I was fortunate enough to find a new pair on ebay at a great price. They are super comfy and fit perfectly. I love the zippers and elastic details and that they cover more of the foot than most of the other styles I tried. Sandals are the trickiest footwear to get right and Acne came through with these chic gladiators.

Fragility and Ann Demeulemeester

Lately, I have been obsessed with the juxtaposition of tough and fragile. I like the idea of a hard leather jacket with a silk jersey underneath or this feather light, transparent 50% alpaca/50% silk Ann Demeulemeester Black sweater worn over a tank with Black jeans and Black boots. Wearing all Black has become something of an art form for me lately, and I am using texture to keep it interesting.

Available at IF Soho and Barneys NY.

Kehinde Wiley and Michael Jackson

The Kehinde Wiley painting that hangs in the Brooklyn Museum atrium

Kehinde Wiley

Michael Jackson commissioned a portrait by artist Kehinde Wiley in 2008 after being entranced by Wiley's massive painting in the atrium of the Brooklyn Museum. Kehinde Wiley's heroic portraits of African American men in classical poses would prove to be the ideal setting for the legendary King of Pop. Tragically, Michael Jackson did not live to see the completed Rubens inspired, 12 foot painting which was sold in December 2009 at Art Basel Miami by dealer Jeffrey Deitch to a Berlin Museum for $175,000 USD.

Givenchy Tote at Barneys NY

images: barneys.com

This is the perfect black unisex tote for every day. The size is large enough without being overwhelming and the lack of obvious branding is always a pleasant surprise. The leather handles have a sufficient drop to be shoulder carried and the Givenchy signature leather covered chain detail down the side panels give it a distinctive edge.

Available at Barneys NY here. $1750 USD.

Comme des Garçons Homme Plus Kilt

images: gq.com

OK. I know. It's a skirt. Well, to be accurate a kilt or a half kilt. Shown on the Spring/Summer 2010 Comme des Garçons Homme Plus Men's runway over drop crotch (sarouel) cropped pants, I have been wearing my kilt over black skinny jeans. It is held up by two fabric belts and can be worn to the front or back, or even to the side.

Some of the most forward thinking designers in the world are proposing a new wardrobe element and proportion to the basic man's uniform of Shirt + Pants + Jacket. The fresh element of a kilt or knit that comes to mid-thigh, alters the classic proportion by breaking up the expected continuous line of the leg. Furthermore, it lengthens the torso and shortens the leg, the new proportion, finally ending the rule of the cropped schoolboy blazer. This new proportion can be seen in the diverse collections of Comme des Garcons Homme Plus, Ann Demeulemeester, Rick Owens, Julius, and Damir Doma, among others.

Bond no. 9 HIGH LINE

images: bond no. 9

The quirky fragrance house with a collection based on the neighborhoods of New York City brings you High Line. I think this may be their most beautiful bottle yet.

The scent of wildflowers, green grasses … and Manhattan.

The fragrance opens with a prairie grazing weed: purple love grass, with bergamot and tart Indian rhubarb. The scent's floral heart is red-leaf rose, Lady Jane tulips, and grape hyacinth. The base notes combine bur oak--from the sheltering tree that thrives here--with imported sea moss, evocative of the Hudson River, along with musk and teak wood, to remind us that Bond No. 9 High Line is an urban experience.
