Stubbs and Wooten: Peace

What a pleasant surprise when our friends came over this weekend for a drink. Everett was wearing his Christmas gift from Gene, this fabulous pair of Stubbs and Wooten embroidered velvet slippers. They must have been a limited edition, as they are no longer available on the website, but it does appear that you can design your own bespoke pair. Imagine the possibilities.

Alec Soth Paris

image; Alec Soth

"Grand Palais (couple on stairs)" by American artist Alec Soth showcases the perfectly manicured woman with all her trappings: fur, Chanel (suit, bag, shopping bag, etc.) and an insouciant boy with his tousled hair and heavy boots. Is he a model with his mother? Facial tattoos or make-up from the last show? Perhaps a kept boy? Are they the first to arrive or the last to leave?

From the series Fashion Magazine, which can be viewed here.

Alexander Wang Sydney Backpack

The backpack is officially, well, back. That icon of 80s and 90s fashion has been given the Alexander Wang treatment, i.e. ultra utilitarian cool. I'm not sure I'm ready to jump on the bandwagon, but if I were to, I'd probably opt for this grey lambskin version.

Available at Alexander Wang here. $875 USD.

Ann Demeulemeester Silver Gilet Necklace

images: gq.com

This sterling silver gilet (vest) was all over the Spring/Summer 2010 Ann Demeulemeester runway and when I tried it on at Atelier New York, I could not bring myself to take it off. Jewelry is like that, you either have a connection or you don't. A delicate harness to protect me from harm. I love it best as it is shown on the Atelier New York website over a tank.

Available at Atelier New York. Website here.

Alexander Wang T

image: alexanderwang.com

image: alexanderwang.com

Alexander Wang's hugely successful T line for Women just launched this Spring/Summer season for Men and the ultra soft pima cotton over sized tees are perfect. I've been wearing a lot of jersey lately and these are fantastic quality. They are super comfy and make a blazer or leather jacket look more casual. I like the look of wearing a tank under a slightly sheer tee to add textural interest. It is all about layering these two U neck pieces. Keep in mind that they are over sized, which is part of their appeal, but I didn't want to swim in them.

I ordered the Pima Cotton Muscle Tank and the Sheer Tencel T in XS from Alexander Wang's website here. Tencel is a natural fiber similar to rayon or viscose and is derived from wood pulp. The fit is about two sizes larger than typical tees.

Ann Demeulemeester Matte Sequin Vest

What's life without a little glam? Ann Demeulemeester vest in matte Black sequins on Black silk chiffon with rough edges to keep it from being too precious. With no closure, it drapes open with a louche ease. The strong overhead lighting made the sequins shinier than they are in reality. I will wear this as casually as possible over a tee or tank, perhaps just peeking out under a jacket--day or night. We have an event coming up soon . . .

Falling For Faliero Sarti

I was visiting my favorite Shrine to Black: Atelier New York a couple of weeks ago, when none other than Will.i.am of The Black Eyed Peas sauntered in to peruse the racks--sans entourage. I knew the Black Eyed Peas were performing at Madison Square Garden, but what a rare treat to see him in person looking slicker than ever in his Rick Owens Black nylon jacket piling up fabulous clothes from Atelier's niche designers. But, enough about Will.i.am.

I had heard of Faliero Sarti and their delicately ethereal scarves, but feared that since Winter was on the wane, that I would have to wait until next year to procure one. Well, Atelier was onto me. This beautiful Silver Grey 90% Modal/10% Cashmere delight was dangling just within my grasp and when I touched it, I knew it had to be mine. I've been buying a lot of black lately and sticking to a more neutral palette. This feather light scarf will add a touch of fragile draped texture to my more severe silhouettes. I'm wearing it in my Monday Outfit post this week.

Available at Atelier New York.

Acne Gladiator Sandals

I've been searching for just the right pair of sandals for the warmer weather. Because I live in NYC, where we actually walk a great deal of the time, I wanted something comfortable with a thick enough sole to offer support, but of course I was not willing to sacrifice style.

The Acne Tour Low sandals are actually from Spring/Summer '09 and I was fortunate enough to find a new pair on ebay at a great price. They are super comfy and fit perfectly. I love the zippers and elastic details and that they cover more of the foot than most of the other styles I tried. Sandals are the trickiest footwear to get right and Acne came through with these chic gladiators.

Lanvin Flower Lapel Pin

How about a flower on your lapel? Not just for cotillions anymore, this burst of texture from the Lanvin Men's collection is keen on anything from a denim jacket to a trench coat. Gentlemen, you had better hurry before the ladies beat you to it.

Available at Barneys NY here. $185 USD.

Fragility and Ann Demeulemeester

Lately, I have been obsessed with the juxtaposition of tough and fragile. I like the idea of a hard leather jacket with a silk jersey underneath or this feather light, transparent 50% alpaca/50% silk Ann Demeulemeester Black sweater worn over a tank with Black jeans and Black boots. Wearing all Black has become something of an art form for me lately, and I am using texture to keep it interesting.

Available at IF Soho and Barneys NY.

The Kehinde Wiley painting that hangs in the Brooklyn Museum atrium

image: brooklynmuseum.org

Kehinde Wiley

Michael Jackson commissioned a portrait by artist Kehinde Wiley in 2008 after being entranced by Wiley's massive painting in the atrium of the Brooklyn Museum. Kehinde Wiley's heroic portraits of African American men in classical poses would prove to be the ideal setting for the legendary King of Pop. Tragically, Michael Jackson did not live to see the completed Rubens inspired, 12 foot painting which was sold in December 2009 at Art Basel Miami by dealer Jeffrey Deitch to a Berlin Museum for $175,000 USD.

For more information on artist Kehinde Wiley please visit his website here.
